April 1, 2013

Greetings S.S. HANAMI fans!!! This is Robbi, with your April edition of SAKURA ZENSEN. First off, Thank You to everyone who watched our performance(s) at the Japanese Culture Festival, whether you specifically went out of your way to see us, or just happened to be there.
Now, before we get into show announcements and other band-related business, I have an important announcement to make:

I really, really love Science! And I say this not only because I grew up wanting to be Dexter from Dexter’s Laboratory, but also because Science has given me the gift of being able to see one of my lifelong dreams come to fruition. Thanks to the A-list nanotechnology researchers at ISIS (and their *cough* moral flexibility *cough cough* when it comes to pushing the boundaries of the human genome) I am thrilled beyond belief to report that yours truly has become the first recorded instance of splicing genuine, fully functional bunny ears onto a human being! And if that weren’t cool enough, they also gave me my very own fluffy rabbit tail… for FREE (well, for “some unspecified future favor,” but I can’t imagine that it’ll be too much trouble).
Because the bunny ears are fully integrated into my central nervous system, they actually have feeling in them and are surprisingly sensitive. Therefore, I’ll have to ask that you *please* don’t sneak up behind me and pull them. (The same goes for my tail~) Thank you in advance! :3

Thank you ISIS

Thank you ISIS

In other news, we’ve just updated the SHOWS section of sshanami.com with several new events. For starters, we will be appearing with My Dearest Friend this Saturday, April 6, at Taco & Tequila in Downtown Cocoa. Check out the FACEBOOK EVENT PAGE or the SHOWS section for details and directions. That show is FREE and starts at 8:00pm.

In conclusion, I hope that you all have a fantastic April. Oh, but before I go… part of the deal for the ears & tail was that I’d regularly plug ISIS in our newsletters. So, if there are any persons in good health who’d be willing to waive some of their human rights and subject themselves to a small modicum of danger in exchange for the exciting possibility of having their very own fully functional <<insert cute animal here>> ears and tail, contact the ISIS Applied Research Department at ┓┏ 凵 =╱⊿┌┬┐
Trust me, it’s really a small price to pay in exchange for being a part of such groundbreaking research. (And I still haven’t gotten tired of watching my ears twitch in the mirror when I dry my hair…)

ヽ(^・ω・^=)~ Nyah!!!

Hello, Earth!!! Robbi here, and I’ve got a few treats for you all in this month’s SAKURA ZENSEN.

First off, Skylab Recording Studios, where we recorded most of our album, has a REALLY cool new feature where you can take a virtual tour of their facility through google+ street view. Click HERE to check it out!!! Can you spot our CD plaque on the wall? ;3 It’s like Where’s Waldo. Look carefully…

As far as shows this month go, S.S. HANAMI and My Dearest Friend are *back* at Taco & Tequila on St. Patrick’s Day (Sunday, March 17) at 9:00pm sharp. Grab a bite to eat and listen as two of Brevard’s finest bands bring the feels and the festivities!!!
Wearing green is cool… wearing green *costumes* is cooler! =D Prizes will be given to the best St. Patrick’s Day themed outfits.

By the way, if you haven’t heard My Dearest Friend yet, then make doubly sure to attend this show. They describe themselves as “Progressive indie rock that combines sweet melodies, driving rhythms, catchy riffs, and dramatic changes to convey… feeling” (which they certainly succeed at.) Additionally, our very own Andrew Wiggins plays drums in MDF, while James Brinkle Jr. is on vocals and guitar. Please visit their FACEBOOK and WEBSITE.
And did we mention the food? If you’re too young to toast St. Patty’s with us, then grab a few of your friends and sit down for some Mexican food. =D

Lastly, check out our GALLERY for some photographs from our Masquerade earlier this month, taken by Dave Good. We owe an unbelievably HUUUGE thanks to Taco & Tequila… We found out mere hours before the Masquerade was scheduled to begin that we couldn’t hold it where we’d originally planned. Our managers just walked into Taco & Tequila and asked if we could have our Masquerade there — the owners said yes, and within a few hours, My Dearest Friend was taking the stage (er, I mean balcony) followed by yours truly. The owners were even cool enough to let us drop countless balloons onto the first floor from the second floor balcony at one point during the show.

Greetings and salutations! Now that the Holidays are over, we’re trading in our Santa hats and stripey elf tights for gator kigurumi, and packing our bags for SWAMPCON. It’s a two-day free anime convention located at the University of Florida in Gainesville. We’ll be taking the stage at the Orange and Brew at 8:15 PM on Saturday (January 12).

Hope to seeya there!
In the meantime, check out this interview from Holiday Matsuri. It’s the most fun I’ve ever had doing an interview and it covers topics ranging from our songwriting process to how we met (spoilers: I bit James when he tried to steal my chair in Geography class) to an in-depth look at several of the songs, and even our favorite Doctor.

We also have a video of our Saturday performance at Holiday Matsuri — the sound cuts in and out at some points, but there are some pretty great camera angles (thank you Chris Lennon) as well as footage of our two most recent songs. Check out Chris’ WEBSITE and his YOUTUBE.

Well, here’s to the one and only 2013 that you’ll ever get to experience, and as my hero GACKT is fond of saying… “The future is too dazzling to see~”

Holiday Matsuri

Well, it’s that time of year… and *sigh* -_-; Jack Frost seems to have skipped our state once again (I think the last time he paid a visit to Florida was the Ice Age). Nevertheless, like every other year, in defiance of that Grinch of a weatherman, we’ll string up our ornaments and pile up the fluffy synthetic snow in our department store holiday displays. Ohh, what I’d give to be able to enjoy roasting chestnuts over a warm fireplace (I currently have the air-conditioning on, and I’m still burning up >_<). If, like me, you’re still patiently waiting for the first snow against all odds, then have no fear, kindred spirits! S.S. HANAMI doesn’t have control over the weather (yet) but we can most certainly bring you more than enough Holiday Cheer to make up for this unfortunate lack of white. =D

Let’s flee the copious sand and palm trees, and run off together to a Winter Wonderland. Yep, I’m talking about HOLIDAY MATSURI — the “festive convention with holiday cheer” — THIS WEEKEND, December 14-16, at the Embassy Suites Orlando (Lake Buena Vista South.) And yep, S.S. HANAMI is going to be there to add to the entertainment. Head over to www.holidaymatsuri.com to check out the events and book your hotel room now.

S.S. HANAMI will be performing twice — Friday the 14th from 9:00-10:00pm and Saturday the 15th from 4:00-5:00pm — on the Second Stage. We hope to see you there. =P [Editor’s Note: a little bunny told me that, after the Friday show, Robbi might be making an appearance in The Otaku Army’s late-night Yaoi University panel at Midnight. <_<]

With that, I’ll leave you with links to the lyrics of the new yet-to-be-recorded songs we’ll be performing at Holiday Matsuri. For those who like to know the words beforehand:

ZERO TALENT

Another Yesterday

月見 (Tsukimi)

Still waiting for the falling snow to take me in his arms,

‘AMV Contest’ Winners Announced!!!

Greetings everyone! Robbi from S.S. HANAMI here, at your service~ (*^_^)ノ⌒*`*`*

I hope that everyone survived Pink Friday in one piece (Black Friday sounds far too dreary! =P) As for yours truly, I barricaded my windows, hid under my covers, and had myself a marathon of Johnny Depp movies (can two movies be considered a “marathon”?)

Er… anyway, it was great seeing some of you at Chibi-Pa last weekend, and we’re grateful to everyone who was able to make it to our performance! If it weren’t for you, we’d be playing for an empty room, and that’d be no fun at all. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ Catch us again next month at HOLIDAY MATSURI (DECEMBER 14-16) in Orlando, FL — for tickets, hotel info, directions, or more information, go to www.holidaymatsuri.com

And speaking of Holiday Matsuri, we have two WINNERS to announce, who each won one free weekend pass by virtue of their superb AMV-skills! Thanks to everyone who participated in our AMV Contest; we sat down as a band and watched every entry. The criteria we took into consideration when choosing our First Place and Runner Up were: ingenuity, editing, creativity, how well the song complimented the selected anime, and entertainment value.

So without further ado… *drum rolllllll* …here is the First Place AMV — Callipolis by “Ocean M.”

Aaaaannnnd our Runner Up is — Yukimi by “Mariah G.”

Thanks again to everyone who entered and STAY TUNED because we hope to make a habit out of contests like this. Seeya next month in ORLANDO! \(^O^)/ *dramatic arena-esque reverb*

November 14, 2012 — A RETURN TO THE PLACE WHERE WE BEGAN

Helllllloooo fellow con-goers and S.S. HANAMI enthusiasts!!! It’s that time of year — the cool Autumn stillness in the air, the beauty and melancholy that accompany the transience of the changing seasons, and of course CHIBI-PA Anime and Japanese Culture Festival!!!!! \(-ㅂ-)/

And, yes, Chibi-Pa has graciously invited S.S. HANAMI back to perform this year. We play THIS Saturday (Nov 17) @ 3:00 in Main Events. Line up outside the doors early so you get a good seat 😉 (not to mention it just plain makes us feel better when there’s a long line outside the door =P)

As many of you know, Chibi-Pa was where we got our start three years ago, in 2009. So come and bask in the sepia-hued nostalgia with us. This year, Chibi-Pa is located at the Doubletree by Hilton in Deerfield Beach, FL. Directions, details, event schedule, etc. are at www.chibipa.com — it’s $35 for a weekend pass or $25 for Saturday only. Hotel info is available on the site as well.

Before I go, a BIG thanks to everyone who submitted entries to our S.S. HANAMI AMV Contest. We’ll be judging those within the next couple of weeks and get back to you asap with the winners. (^.^)/”””””’

Seeya at the con! If you wanna find me to hang out (or just to tell me how awesome our new songs are), look for a sleep-deprived but most-likely spastic Shuichi scouring the labyrinthine dealer’s room or the twisting corridors of the con hotel for the slightest trace of the first snow (in Florida, no less!) desperately calling out 由貴 由貴 由貴~~~~!!! at the top of his lungs.

On seeing the 100% perfect girl one beautiful April morning

Welcome! Lemme kick off this blog with a reading recommendation — a very short one that shouldn’t take more than a few minutes to get through. I read this short story as part of a ‘Narrative & Media in Japan’ class back at UF, and it still remains one of my favorites. I hope you enjoy it:
